Background of the Study
Social media has revolutionized political engagement by providing youths in Ondo West with immediate access to political news, debates, and civic discussions. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have emerged as spaces where young people can actively participate in political discourse, share opinions, and mobilize around key issues (Afolabi, 2023). This digital engagement has led to a heightened sense of political awareness and participation among the youth, who are using these channels to question established political narratives and demand accountability from public officials (Obi, 2024). However, the rapid spread of information—and misinformation—on these platforms also presents challenges in discerning credible news and forming balanced opinions (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study critically explores how social media contributes to youth political awareness in Ondo West, examining the benefits and risks associated with digital political engagement and its implications for democratic participation (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
While social media platforms have enhanced political awareness among youths in Ondo West, there are concerns regarding the spread of misinformation and the quality of political discourse. The reliance on digital platforms for political information may lead to polarization and superficial understanding of complex political issues. The lack of comprehensive research on how social media shapes genuine political engagement among the youth highlights the need for a systematic study to identify both the positive and negative effects of this digital revolution (Obi, 2024).
