Background of the Study
Social media has revolutionized political engagement by providing youths in Ondo West with immediate access to political news, debates, and civic discussions. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have emerged as spaces where young people can actively participate in political discourse, share opinions, and mobilize around key issues (Afolabi, 2023). This digital engagement has led to a heightened sense of political awareness and participation among the youth, who are using these channels to question established political narratives and demand accountability from public officials (Obi, 2024). However, the rapid spread of information—and misinformation—on these platforms also presents challenges in discerning credible news and forming balanced opinions (Oluwaseun, 2023). This study critically explores how social media contributes to youth political awareness in Ondo West, examining the benefits and risks associated with digital political engagement and its implications for democratic participation (Afolabi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
While social media platforms have enhanced political awareness among youths in Ondo West, there are concerns regarding the spread of misinformation and the quality of political discourse. The reliance on digital platforms for political information may lead to polarization and superficial understanding of complex political issues. The lack of comprehensive research on how social media shapes genuine political engagement among the youth highlights the need for a systematic study to identify both the positive and negative effects of this digital revolution (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of social media in increasing youth political awareness.
  2. To identify challenges related to misinformation and polarization.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing quality political engagement.

Research Questions:

  1. How does social media influence political awareness among youths in Ondo West?
  2. What challenges arise from digital political engagement?
  3. What measures can improve informed political participation?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media significantly increases youth political awareness.
  2. Misinformation negatively affects political understanding.
  3. Educational interventions can enhance the quality of online political engagement.

Significance of the Study
This study offers important insights for political stakeholders, educators, and policymakers by revealing how social media shapes youth political awareness. The results will help in designing interventions that promote critical engagement and informed decision-making among young citizens (Oluwaseun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The research is limited to examining social media’s role in fostering youth political awareness within Ondo West Local Government. Limitations include the rapidly changing nature of digital platforms and potential response biases.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Media: Digital platforms that facilitate information sharing and interaction.
  • Political Awareness: Understanding and engagement with political processes and issues.
  • Digital Political Engagement: Active participation in political discourse through online channels.
